چکیده

0 We tested predictions about how the e}ect of vegetation and litter on seedling establishment varies among sites and herbaceous community types "sand barrens\ prairies\ fens#[ For both vegetation and litter\ we also separated direct interactions from indirect interactions and interaction modi_cations along the gradient[ 1 Although the intensity of the e}ects varied across sites\ the direct e}ects of vegetation or litter alone were consistently facilitative along the productivity gradient[ Pre! dominance of facilitative e}ects may be due to the focus on the seedling establishment phase[ 2 However\ inclusion of indirect interactions and interaction modi_cations caused the net e}ects of both vegetation and litter to become largely negative[ While one layer of biomass may be advantageous to ameliorate some moisture stress\ the addition of another layer may be disadvantageous if this layer limits light proportionally more than it relieves moisture stress[ 3 One exception to this pattern occurred at high productivity when the net e}ect of vegetation\ even in the presence of litter\ remained facilitative[ The net e}ect of vegetation was competitive at low productivity and grew increasingly facilitative with productivity[ Thus\ indirect e}ects of litter may alter interaction patterns across this gradient[

Partitioning the Effects of Plant Biomass and Litter on Andropogon Gerardi in Old-field Vegetation

We examined the effects of living plant neighbors and litter on the performance of a native C4 grass, Andropogon gerardi, at five old-field sites that differ in community biomass and soil fertility. We used plant removal experiments in which both living neighbors and litter were manipulated in a factorial arrangement of treatments over one growing season. Andropogon was added to treatment plots...

Predicted changes in vegetation structure affect the susceptibility to invasion of bryophyte-dominated subarctic heath.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS A meta-analysis of global change experiments in arctic tundra sites suggests that plant productivity and the cover of shrubs, grasses and dead plant material (i.e. litter) will increase and the cover of bryophytes will decrease in response to higher air temperatures. However, little is known about which effects these changes in vegetation structure will have on seedling recr...

Within- and Across-Species Responses of Plant Traits and Litter Decomposition to Elevation across Contrasting Vegetation Types in Subarctic Tundra

Elevational gradients are increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for understanding how community and ecosystem properties respond to climatic factors, but little is known about how plant traits and their effects on ecosystem processes respond to elevation. We studied the response of plant leaf and litter traits, and litter decomposability across a gradient of elevation, and thus temperature...

Linking spatial patterns of leaf litterfall and soil nutrients in a tropical forest: a neighborhood approach.

Leaf litter represents an important link between tree community composition, forest productivity and biomass, and ecosystem processes. In forests, the spatial distribution of trees and species-specific differences in leaf litter production and quality are likely to cause spatial heterogeneity in nutrient returns to the forest floor and, therefore, in the redistribution of soil nutrients. Using ...

Cover of coastal vegetation as an indicator of eutrophication along environmental gradients

Coastal vegetation communities are important for primary production, biodiversity, coastal protection, carbon and nutrient cycling which, in combination with their sensitivity to eutrophication, render them potential indicators of environmental status for environmental policies like the EU Water and Marine Strategy Framework Directives. We evaluated one potential indicator for coastal vegetatio...
